Full One Year Job Opportunity in the Washington D.C. area  for a Highly Motivated Student Wishing To Pursue A Career in Medicine

Dr. Bruce Glassman, a general Dermatologist in Alexandria, Virginia, and Dr. Dan Hanfling, an Emergency Room physician at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia, are seeking individuals interested in a medical career for our year-long internship and medical assistant position.  These positions are ideal for the typical “bridge year” student who is graduating or has  graduated from undergraduate school and has not yet applied or been accepted to medical school. This elite program is now in its 13th year with most graduates moving on to successful careers as physicians or physician’s assistants.

These positions are available beginning May 2017 through June 2018.  Although some flexibility with these dates is negotiable, the positions are a year long commitment to the physicians.  Please only apply if you are available for this period of time.  Applicants will not be considered if they are currently applying for medical school to begin in the class of September 2017.  Please do not apply unless you have completed your undergraduate degree by May 2017 or earlier.

Multiple positions are available.  One applicant will be selected to work as both a medical assistant and as an ER scribe.  The other accepted applicants will be selected to work in Dr. Glassman’s office only.  A car is required for both positions.

Both positions give an unparalleled clinical experience and are a once in a lifetime opportunity for anyone interested in the medical profession.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Medical Assistant in Dermatology office (Alexandria, VA):

Assist the physician with all patient care duties including triage of patients, writing and understanding prescriptions and their uses, biopsy preparation and clean up, surgical procedures and clean up. This opportunity affords the employee the opportunity to meet hundreds of patients per week, to develop the appropriate skills to further their career in the medical profession, and to learn the basics of dermatology.

The time commitment is approximately 30-40 hours/week.

Emergency Room Scribe (Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, VA):

This portion of the package allows the student to follow an ER physician for the hours he is working at Fairfax Hospital and its affiliates.  The main responsibility of the scribe is to accompany the physician to medical exams and report in writing the medical findings and treatment plan.  The intern is an employee of INOVA Health System and is required to abide by the regulations in place for all scribes that work for the hospital.

This opportunity is unique in that all types of cases from trauma to the common cold are observed by the student in an intense medical environment. The time commitment is a weekend shift approximately every third weekend (two 10-hour shifts over a weekend).

Both positions are paying but more importantly the experience cannot be matched for someone interested in the medical field.

If interested please contact Dr Glassman by email.  Send CV to   bridgeyear@gmail.com
