Clinical Research Assistant position at Children’s National Medical Center

This Clinical Research Assistant position at Children’s National Medical Center is ideally suited for graduating seniors who want a gap period before attending medical school. The position will report to Venkat Shankar, MD, MBA, Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Shankar is also an attending physician in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) with research interests including Extracorporeal membrane Oxygenation, status asthmaticus, and congenital heart disease.

This research assistant will participate in the Division’s research projects and collaborate with other attending physicians and critical care fellows. For clinical research projects the work involves consenting and interviewing families, constructing and managing databases using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap), and procuring relevant clinical data from the electronic health record. The research assistant will also participate in retrospective, epidemiological studies and should be well versed in performing literature reviews and comfortable working with large data sets. The research assistant will have the opportunity to shadow attending intensivists in the PICU and CICU at Children’s National in order to further their clinical knowledge. Pediatric Critical Care Medicine is a dynamic sub-specialty and so this is only a partial list of activities.

Our past research assistants have been heavily involved in writing abstracts and manuscripts for publication and presenting at national conferences. All of our past research assistants have been admitted to their top choice medical schools and have found their time at Children’s National to be extremely valuable.
